Anubis is an ancient Egyptian god. Originally he was known as god of the Underworld, but as time progressed, Osiris took over that role. Anubis eventually became more associated with funeral rites and embalming in particular. Additionally, he is seen as the patron of lost souls, including orphans.
In hieroglyphs, Anubis was often depicted with the body of a man and head of a jackal. In full-body images, he is seen holding an ankh, the magical symbol associated with eternal life and healing. This is very common for Egyptian deities– they are normally depicted as half or fully animal, and always hold symbols of power to parade their strength.
